Walks in the Dales - local walks on the doorstep

 ONCE YOU ARE HERE you can LEAVE YOUR CAR HERE
  • 5 miles walk over the hills through Caldberg to East Witton where a walm welcome awaits at the famous Blue Lion
  • 2 miles walk in the opposite direction high up through Swineside leads to The Thwaite Arms at Horsehouse, returning via leafy Turnbeck Lane (3 miles)
  • half a mile walk straight up to Roova Crag where there is a quaint hunters lodge built into the stone with a fantastic view of the surrounding Dale -right over to the East Coast and the sea.
  • on the way to Roova Crag is a little detour to the magnificent hidden waterfall of Great Ghyll (even some of the villagers haven't been there.)
  • 1 mile walk to Otter's Cave where a string of potholes ,sumps and passages lead up to the village (not for amateurs)
  • 1.5 miles walk to the ruins of ST Simons and ST Judes chapel right by the River Cover, where there is fresh Spring with reputed healing powers.
  • 1 mile walk across fields, over the River Cover and through woods to Carlton, then another 3 miles over the moors to the top of Penhill where again there are fantastic views. (Castle Bolton, Leyburn, Bolton Hall etc can all be seen from there)
  • longer treks over the moors to Costerdale and Scar House Reservoir ( approx 11miles) or over the moors to West Burton in Bishopdale, ( good pub) and back via Penhill (approx 12 miles)

Goose bank is perfectly positioned in the heart of the Dales as a base for walkers. And with its spacious rooms and high ceilings ( no bumping your head on low beams or doorways!) it is a relaxing place to be . The elegant tiled hallway is extremely practical.
